Blam! The tip of the pepper is the color the entire fruit will be soon. I don't know how I missed this when I was gardening the other day... I guess I was too distracted by the enormous tomato plants.
Here's a shot of the next pepper down on the plant. As you can see, the very tip is starting to turn a brownish red. Once a pepper turns fully bright red I'll be picking it and stinging it along the top of a window to dry out. Then I'll use a food processor to chop up everything but the stem and voila, homegrown crushed red pepper flakes.
